All Shall Tread
03:52
|
|||
smoke and bile, smoke and bile
flowing long and backwards as the mean ol Nile
sin and kicks, sin and kicks
there’s a kid skippin stones on the river Styx
deep and muddy, deep and muddy
blood don’t run clean, it don’t run for money
rust only comes for strength that gleams
dust only settles on the pure and clean
everything you’re doing, you’re doing to yourself
you’ve never said a word to anyone else
all shall tread and none shall enter
the way and door both made of splinters
the eyes can fear but cannot see
the mind whispers lies of clarity
the lungs heave on but draw no breath
the heart beats out a long slow death
the gut is true, the gut is free
like a snake laid long in a rootless tree
all shall tread and none shall enter
all shall tread and none shall enter

My Baby
02:07
|
|||
wine, pears, honey and cheese
me and my baby do what we please
wine, pears, honey and cheese
me and my baby do what we please
my baby makes me feel
strong in the knees
me and my baby do just what we please
chicken, biscuits, gravy, bacon
man my baby knows how to make em
chicken, biscuits, gravy, bacon
my baby knows how to make em
my baby knows the chances
and how to take em
yeah my baby knows how to make em
early in the morning, late at night
I don’t know how to put up a fight
you aint weary and I aint worried
just don’t forget we gotta get up early
cigarettes, cold beer and funny faces
man my mind goes all kinds of places
cigarettes, cold beer, funny faces
my mind goes all kinds of places
my mind roams
my baby chases
yeah my mind goes all kinds of places

Love and Money
04:15
|
|||
creepin, crawlin doubt
strikin at me, trying to pull my throat out
I’d sing a song that soothes
if I knew what it was about
and it hurts to be free
from having to become what you could never be
I’m hummin low on bended knee
hoping a tune
might carry me
used to have fun at sad arcades
where I only paid with quarters for the games I played
there’s not much time for playin
when there’s love and money to be made
the world you see is a mirror
big and broken, it gets clearer and clearer
fate’s a hard woman who screams like a preacher
if you get near her
I can’t stand people
never understood what happens under a steeple
I suppose you learn to save if you can’t find a way
to be lethal
used to have fun at sad arcades
where I only paid with quarters for the games I played
there’s not much time for playin
when there’s love and money to be made
I ran myself down last night
that mirror gave a look that seemed to say
“I wanna fight”
so I struck a true blow
at a certain angle
in the right light
I’ve been feelin flat out kicked up and buffeted
don’t get me wrong, no, we won’t be discussin it
every chance cuts like a knife as it runs through my life
and I hope something’s getting sharper because of it
used to have fun at sad arcades
where I only paid with quarters for the games I played
there’s not much time for playin
when there’s love and money to be made

Travelin
05:26
|
|||
being young’s hard for even a sparrow
even though my path begin to narrow
can my marrow build me up
on wings of my own design?
cause the line a wheelbarrow travels
is like your gut unraveled
and it bears a heavy load
as you walk by
you are just travelin
well, travelin
travelin down the alleys of your mind
travelin, travelin
who knows what you might find
got my good girl comin to see me
she’s good cause lovin her hard is easy
believe me I know she’s headed my way
I have no tongue to speak it
well my eyes can hardly peek it
but I feel her steppin up now at the close of day
she is just travelin
yes, travelin
our end remains the same by some strange means
travelin, travelin
I’ll see you travelin to me in my dreams
Is a man really alive
unless he wants what has no size,
number, color, not even a name?
cause when I was a boy
well, I knew I’d be destroyed
so I’m holdin on now
for when I won’t remain
I’m just travelin
yes, travelin
I’m touchin everything I find in bloom
travelin, travelin
it’s getting dark now, it’s gonna be dawn soon

End of the World
03:16
|
|||
some god must have slept in the morning
sun rose red like an early warning
man was screaming on the radio:
“it’s the end of the world but
before you go:
well, there’re gonna be t-shirts
couple of hot sales,
even pretty young girls
servin up cocktails
everything manmade
is gettin knocked way down--
There might even be a clown.”
well that sounded like a little fun to me
so I went to the window to see what I could see
little boy was hollerin bout the end of times
while his buddy combed my car for nickels and dimes
nickels and dimes
he said someone’s gonna be blowin
a mean trombone
people might even leave
their phones at home
there’s gonna be a wedding
between the footfall and the stair
it’s all goin down
and everybody’s gonna be there
has all this time been spent in vain?
a hollow voice calling an empty name
and everything said was every word true
but everything that is must pay its due
sure enough I found a parade in the street
no one could seem to stop movin their feet
there were a couple good dancers
a couple bad jokes
the sun went down with their foolish hopes
all the birds were flying away
to where the bugs were crawlin
running’s never felt
more like fallin
lots of people cryin
but I’m saying “man, it’s okay,
it all had to end some way--
but what day was today?”

Traincrossin
02:31
|
|||
a train crossed the road
no one inside,
no one inside
a train crossed the road
no one inside,
no one inside
all the lights on
but no
no one to ride
no one to ride
no one to ride
you know the days march on
bound to repeat
bound to repeat
the days march on
bound to repeat
bound to repeat
it’s a wide, round world
but I stay on a street
I stay on a street
I stay on a street

Right on Time
05:52
|
|||
empty of all sense, in need of recompense
I took the train and climbed the stair
watched the show and saw you there
I needed more, it was plain to see
you gave all that you had to me
right on time
right on time
and though I was much less than fine
you made me yours and I made you mine
right on time
I still seem to find the gloom in every afternoon
but when I pull my brain back in my head
tell myself, “quit actin dead,”
and when I’m mostly lackin will
the way appears all clear and still
right on time
right on time
I take the blame, the fault is mine
but there’s cool air blowin all through the pines
right on time
there’s no leavin you can do
til your body’s rid of you
until we reach the lonely end
we must ceaselessly begin
and a wave that can rise no more
must break upon the waiting shore
right on time
right on time
when you look back through the years in rhyme
didn’t you sign in blood on that crooked line?
right on time
my soul don’t stroll it roves about
like it’s trying to get out
it’s hard to learn to fall
when you’ve got a name to call
I could be a better man
but you might have to lend a hand
make it right on time
right on time
though the heart must suffer a lonely mind
I’d be lost in it all if you weren’t so kind
and always right on time
I shouldn’t be so grim
my mood just needs a trim
run your fingers through my hair
I’ll part with all that I can bare
and everything I’ve learned to give
is all the more I’ve learned to live
always right on time
right on time
though the empty meet with the sublime
days and nights full of struggle leave
fruit on the vine
right on time

In the Morning
02:56
|
|||
in the morning
I can hardly move
my feet into my shoes
it’s less like a rut
and more like a groove
in the morning
I get up and I go to work
comin home feelin like a jerk
it’s no way to live
but it’s got its perks
in the morning
I feel just like air
heavy as a long stare
from across the room
at something that isn’t there

Am I Kind
02:36
|
|||
am I kind my love?
do you mind my love?
my heart’s not blind
but it does not scrutinize my love
my heart sees itself whenever I look at you
I hope I have a way
with all these words I say
to wish you nothing but a wonderful day
but wishing’s just a game
whenever I look at you
love’s a lonely song we make up as we go along
a lovely way to pass the time for two
though time rolls away and fades
as long as that sweet melody plays
I’m gonna be tappin my feet right here
with you
your eyes they never miss
my worried mind they kiss
the warmth you share with me is all I know of bliss
I need know nothing at all whenever I look at you
though doubts have often swirled
hard words been falsely hurled
they’re always clouds my love
in this funny little world
but everything’s in the light
whenever I look at you
love’s a lonely song we make up as we go along
a lovely way to pass the time for two
though time rolls away and fades
as long as that sweet melody plays
I’m gonna be tappin my feet right here
with you
