some god must have slept in the morning
sun rose red like an early warning
man was screaming on the radio:
“it’s the end of the world but
before you go:
well, there’re gonna be t-shirts
couple of hot sales,
even pretty young girls
servin up cocktails
everything manmade
is gettin knocked way down--
There might even be a clown.”
well that sounded like a little fun to me
so I went to the window to see what I could see
little boy was hollerin bout the end of times
while his buddy combed my car for nickels and dimes
nickels and dimes
he said someone’s gonna be blowin
a mean trombone
people might even leave
their phones at home
there’s gonna be a wedding
between the footfall and the stair
it’s all goin down
and everybody’s gonna be there
has all this time been spent in vain?
a hollow voice calling an empty name
and everything said was every word true
but everything that is must pay its due
sure enough I found a parade in the street
no one could seem to stop movin their feet
there were a couple good dancers
a couple bad jokes
the sun went down with their foolish hopes
all the birds were flying away
to where the bugs were crawlin
running’s never felt
more like fallin
lots of people cryin
but I’m saying “man, it’s okay,
it all had to end some way--
but what day was today?”
